A bohemian style, or boho style, has been in design trends in the past few years and even now it is one of the favourite interior design styles for people with artistic nature. So what is this style all about and how to pull it off if you think it is the right one for you?
When I think of bohemian style, I imagine characters of Jack Kerouac novels, chaotic and unsettling writers and travellers, who live without a plan and enjoy small things life can offer. So what is the bohemian style?
In short, it’s a rule-breaking and unconventional style of decorating a living space. It was inspired by people living an unordinary life, like writers, actors, constant travellers, free-spirited hippies, basically alternatives to bourgeois expectations.
If you choose the bohemian style for your living space, you should forget about any design rules and think of randomness. But to say, that the bohemian style has no rules would be also false. Few things need to be considered to pull it off.
First, earthy tones, like brown, green, metallic mixed with white, orange, beige. Call it fifty shades of beige.
Second, patterns. The bohemian style is inspired by travellers coming from exotic places, bringing Persian rugs as souvenirs from their pilgrimage. Exotic patterns is a must.
Third, a textile that looks old. It is not necessary to use your grandma’s pillowcases, nowadays even big home decor companies produce the textile that looks and feels worn.
Fourth, vintage furniture. This is my favourite point. I am a big fan of renovating old furniture and you can have a look at some of my renovation projects, so mixing the textile and patterns with vintage furniture make your living space look boho.
Fifth, in my last style article we talked about Japandi minimalistic style. The bohemian style is the opposite of Japandi because the rule is simple: more is more. Nonetheless, make sure you don’t exhaust your space to make it look like a hoarder’s den.
Overall, it is a wonderful style for your home if you enjoy handmade items, old earthy tones and patterns, vintage furniture and most importantly the feeling of cosiness and comfort. It is all about uniqueness. The bohemian interior has many patterns, unexpected objects, brightness, art pieces. The interior design has many advantages, for example, every piece would be probably unique.
