Oh hello there! Do you remember like one million times me saying how much sustainability is a big thing in my life and my Ommik brand? So today, I want to introduce you to some home decor brands that use recycled materials in the production of their lines. It is a nice way to contribute to sustainable living as a consumer. So let’s have a look at them and how we can make our homes pretty and not destroy the world, shall we?
As one of the first artisanal paper studios in India, Oorjaa has learnt its craft through a journey of discovery. Along the way, it has been joined by people who share its curiosity of material and passion to create not just lamps, but spaces that glow from within. From just two people and exciting forays into papermaking, Oorjaa has grown into a family of 35 artisans and 3 designers today, lighting up homes, hotels, art installations and more.
Another Indian brand, Mishcat Co, aims at changing the way people perceive sustainable luxury in the global design world, by upcycling leftover sari scraps into one-of-a-kind carpets; and using each as a starting point to a new, beautifully curated space.
Each vivid, handmade beauty brings with it unique features that result from different yarns and the artisan’s style of weaving. Working in rural areas across Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh, Mishcat Co supports a network of independent artisans and weavers who due to limitations, have not been able to move to bigger cities and work in large scale production houses.
The Citizenry offers handcrafted items from all over the world and highlights goods that are made with recycled, natural, or organic materials. What I like in their selection is throw blankets. Hand-loomed by master weavers in a quiet mountain village in the Peruvian Andes, each baby alpaca throw blanket takes about a week to complete. Made exclusively in a fair trade environment.
Reclaimed wood is wood that has been salvaged or repurposed in one way or another. Reclaimed wood can be fairly old and come from vintage buildings and structures. So the home decor brand Reclaimed Design introduces to the world amazing home decor items made of such reclaimed wood.
In addition to making all our products by hand, we recycle as much of the material used during the process as possible. Offcuts from one product are turned into other products until the offcuts reach a size that is no longer workable.
Besides these beautiful brands, there are so much more to introduce! I tend to think there will be more posts like this to spread the word about the wonderful message each and every one of those brands deliver.
What do you think about these brands? Perhaps you know more brands you can share with us?
