This week, I am working on a sustainable DIY project, fun and unique mini pallet coasters made of wooden popsicle sticks, wooden cubes and… an oyster sauce! Yes, that’s right. I am using very unconventional material to substitute a wood stain.
To make coasters in the shape of mini pallets, I am using popsicle sticks and cutting 9 centimetres long each by getting rid of the oval edges. You need 10 popsicle sticks for one coaster.
After that, I am using a square stick to measure 1 cm long cubes. I need 6 cubes per coaster.
I am using a simple handsaw to saw the cubes.
The same way I am sawing the edges of the popsicle sticks. I piled up 5 popsicle sticks together, so I could saw them in one go.
Now, that is probably the weirdest thing you will see today on the Internet. I am using an oyster sauce instead of a wood stain
to give my wooden pieces a little bit of a dirty look. Using oyster sauce as a wood stain substitute gave the wooden pieces this amazing “dirty look” I needed to make sure my mini pallets look authentic. Besides, oyster sauce is sustainable. The oyster sauce dries really quick, too.
To put all the pieces together, I am using a hot glue gun. I am attaching the cubes to the edges of 3 popsicle sticks.
After that, I attached the other popsicle sticks the way you can see them on the video.
The result is really impressive. The mini palette looks so real. And it is really fun to use it for mugs or glasses at home.
